Set in 1879, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final follows Kenshin Himura, a former swordsman who gave up killing after the Meiji Restoration and now seeks a quiet life alongside Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a fencing school. That peace is shattered when his favorite restaurant, Akabeko, is destroyed and he discovers a note bearing the word "Jinchu." The attack signals the return of Enishi Yukishiro, the brother of Kenshin's late wife, who blames him for her death fifteen years earlier and has assembled followers to take revenge on him and his allies.
Keishi Otomo directed and wrote the screenplay, with Takeru Satoh returning as Kenshin, Emi Takei as Kaoru and Mackenyu as Enishi. The film continues the series Otomo began with 2012's Origins and carried through the two 2014 installments, Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends; it was followed by The Beginning later in 2021. Munetaka Aoki, Yu Aoi and Yusuke Iseya appear among a credited cast of 24.
Released in April 2021, the film took about 43 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.7 from 562 votes, and a small sample of critics' reviews averages 9 out of 10, above both audience figures.
