France is a comedy-drama about France de Meurs, a star television journalist in Paris whose professional life moves between the studio, faraway conflicts and the demands of her family. Her frenetic routine is upended by a car accident in which she injures a pedestrian. Shaken by the event, she tries to step back from the spotlight and live more quietly, but her fame keeps following her, and a bewildering love affair complicates her attempts to regain control.
Bruno Dumont directed and wrote the film, which sits between Slack Bay and The Empire in his filmography. Léa Seydoux plays France, with Blanche Gardin, Benjamin Biolay, Emanuele Arioli, Juliane Köhler and Gaëtan Amiel among the cast. The production was a European co-production involving Germany, Belgium, Italy and France, made for about 6 million USD.
Released in August 2021, the film returned roughly 1 million USD worldwide, well below its budget. On TMDB it holds a 5.2 rating from 239 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.2 from 70 reviews, so reviewers responded more favorably than the general audience did.
