Short description

Spiral: From the Book of Saw follows Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks, a brash New York City detective who has spent his career in the shadow of his father, a celebrated police veteran. When Zeke and his rookie partner, William Schenk, are assigned a case involving a series of gruesome murders, they find that the crimes echo the city's violent past. As the investigation deepens, Zeke is drawn into the killer's morbid game, with his own position at the center of it.

The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who previously directed Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, and it is his tenth feature in the chronological list of his work. Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger wrote the screenplay, and Mark Burg and Oren Koules produced. Chris Rock plays Zeke, with Max Minghella as Schenk and Samuel L. Jackson as Marcus Banks, alongside Marisol Nichols, Dan Petronijevic and Richard Zeppieri.

Made for about 20 million dollars, the film took roughly 41 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from over 65,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from more than 2,300 ratings, a gap suggesting general audiences were somewhat warmer than the site's voters. A film critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 229 reviews places critical response close to the IMDb figure.
