Dream Horse

Dream Horse tells the true story of Jan Vokes, a bartender and cleaner in a small Welsh town who feels stuck in her daily routine and decides to breed a racehorse. With no experience and little money, she persuades her husband, neighbours and friends to pool their modest savings into a syndicate that will cover the cost of raising and training the animal. The group, an unlikely mix of ordinary villagers led by an accountant named Howard Davies, watches the horse, Dream Alliance, improve against all expectations and work its way toward competing with the established racing elite.

The film was directed by Euros Lyn, whose feature credits in chronological order are Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride (2006), this film (2021) and The Radleys (2024). Neil McKay wrote the screenplay, and Katherine Butler and Tracy O'Riordan produced. Toni Collette plays Jan Vokes, with Owen Teale as Brian Vokes, Damian Lewis as Howard Davies, Karl Johnson as Kerby, Siân Phillips as Maureen and Joanna Page as Angela Davies, among 34 credited cast members and 110 credited crew.

Released in May 2021, the British and American co-production runs 113 minutes and mixes comedy with drama. It had a budget of 20 million US dollars and took about 6 million US dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 7,700 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from roughly 142 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 132 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
