Vanguard follows a private security firm whose operatives take on jobs that others cannot handle. When a kidnapping threatens a businessman and those close to him, the company's team is drawn into a mission that expands well beyond a single rescue, bringing them into conflict with a well-armed mercenary network. The group's leader, Tang, directs his squad through the operation as the stakes widen.
Stanley Tong directed and wrote the screenplay, with Barbie Tung Wan-Si, Eddie Wong Chi-Pan and Tong producing. The film sits between Kung Fu Yoga and A Legend in Tong's directing career, continuing a long association with Jackie Chan that stretches back through the Police Story series and Rumble in the Bronx. Chan stars as Tang, heading a cast that includes Yang Yang, Allen, Miya Muqi, Xu Ruohan and Jackson Liu among thirty credited performers. It was shot as a multinational production involving companies and locations across Asia and beyond.
Released in early 2020, the film took in about 51 million dollars worldwide against the scale implied by its international backing. On IMDb it holds 4.7 out of 10 from roughly 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from around 627 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 69 reviews places professional assessments below the TMDB audience figure and slightly under the IMDb score.
