Whispering Smith

Whispering Smith is a railroad detective known for his calm manner. When a gang begins robbing and wrecking trains, he is sent to stop them. His investigation brings him back to the town where his old friend Murray Sinclair lives with his wife Marian, whom Smith once loved. Murray, a railroad employee and rancher, loses his job after a train accident and falls in with the raiders, leaving Smith torn between loyalty to his friend and his duty to the railroad.

The film was directed by Leslie Fenton, working from a screenplay by Frank Butler and Karl Kamb, and was released by Paramount in late 1948. Alan Ladd plays Smith, with Robert Preston as Murray Sinclair, Brenda Marshall as Marian, Donald Crisp as Barney Rebstock, William Demarest as Bill Dansing and Fay Holden as Emmy Dansing. A credited cast of twenty-four supports the leads.
