Short description
Out of Africa is a drama based on the life of Karen Blixen, the Danish author of the autobiographical novel on which the film draws. At the start of the twentieth century she leaves Europe for Kenya, where she marries a Swedish baron and runs a coffee plantation near the Ngong Hills. The marriage is troubled, and she comes to depend on the land and its people while growing close to Denys Finch Hatton, an English adventurer who prizes his independence. Sydney Pollack directed and produced, working from a screenplay by Kurt Luedtke. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford lead the cast, with Klaus Maria Brandauer as Bror, alongside Michael Kitchen, Malick Bowens and Michael Gough among the thirty-two credited performers. The film runs 161 minutes. Pollack's eleventh feature in a directing career of seventeen films, it followed Tootsie and preceded Havana. Made for about 31 million dollars, it took roughly 228 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the more commercially successful releases of its year. Audience response on IMDb, where it has 7.2 from some 92,000 votes, and on TMDB, 7.1 from around 1,600, is close to the critics' 6.9 from 90 reviews, so critical and popular reactions sit at much the same level.
What's left behind the scenes
- Although the film was shot in Africa, lions had to be brought from Californian zoos to the continent. Local laws prohibited filming with genuine African lions.

- In one scene, Karen tries to drive off a lion with a whip. Meryl Streep was assured that the lion would be tied by its hind legs and there was nothing to fear. However, at the crucial moment, the animal turned out to be untethered, and the camera managed to capture Meryl Streep’s genuine fear when she realized the predator had approached too quickly.
