Short description
In a remote research facility, George Almore is developing an artificial intelligence designed to match a human being. His newest prototype, J3, is nearly finished, and this final stage is the most delicate of the project. George is under pressure from his employers, who want results, while he conceals the true purpose of his work: he intends to be reunited with his wife, who died some years earlier. Her preserved consciousness is running out of time, and George has invested everything in a secret plan he cannot disclose.
Archive is a British, Hungarian and American production directed and written by Gavin Rothery, his first feature as director. Theo James, who also produced, plays George Almore; Stacy Martin appears as Jules Almore and as the voices of the prototypes; Rhona Mitra, Peter Ferdinando, Lia Williams and Toby Jones round out the cast. The film mixes drama, fantasy, science fiction and thriller elements across its 109 minutes.
Released in August 2020, the film drew a much warmer response from critics than from audiences: its critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 37 reviews, while it holds 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 29,000 votes and the same 6.4 on TMDB from a few hundred votes, suggesting a modest but divided reception.
