Pierre Niémans, a police commissioner played by Jean Reno, is called to a monastery in Lorraine where a man has been found walled up alive, surrounded by esoteric markings. At the same time, a young captain named Reda, once Niémans's student at the police academy, discovers a man who looks exactly like Christ, barely alive at the foot of a church. Reda initially takes the man for a delusional impostor, but evidence soon links the two investigations, and the former teacher and pupil join forces. The killings around them follow a deliberate pattern, and the victims share names and occupations with the Apostles, suggesting the murders are meant to set something larger in motion.
The film is a sequel to The Crimson Rivers, set in France and built around a religiously themed serial-killer investigation. Olivier Dahan directed it, the only entry in the series he made; his later work includes La Vie en Rose and Grace of Monaco. Luc Besson wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Alain Goldman. The cast features Benoît Magimel as Reda, Camille Natta as Marie, Christopher Lee as Emerich, and Johnny Hallyday as L'ermite, among 29 credited actors.
Released in February 2004, the film took about 40 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 801 votes, indicating a modest audience response.
