Ghosts of War
Short description
During the final phase of World War II, five American soldiers are assigned to hold a French chateau that had recently served as a Nazi command post. The unit replacing them leaves in a hurry, and the newcomers settle in expecting rest and relative comfort. Instead, they encounter a supernatural presence far more frightening than anything they faced in combat.
Ghosts of War was released in 2020 and runs 94 minutes. Eric Bress directed and wrote the screenplay, his second feature after The Butterfly Effect in 2004. The cast includes Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Skylar Astin, Kyle Gallner and Alan Ritchson as the five soldiers, with Billy Zane appearing as Dr. Engel. Joe Simpson, Shelley Madison and D. Todd Shepherd produced the film for Highland Film Group, Miscellaneous Entertainment and Day Tripper Films.
The film blends war, horror, fantasy, science fiction and thriller elements. It holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from 598 votes, a moderate score suggesting a mixed but not indifferent response from viewers. Its modest production scale and relatively small vote count place it as a low-profile genre release rather than a widely seen one.
What's left behind the scenes
- At one point, one of the soldiers mentions "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" as an explanation for what is happening. This is a short story (1890) by the American writer Ambrose Bierce (1842-1913 or 1914) about a civilian during the American Civil War (1861-1865) who manages to escape the gallows after attempting to destroy a railroad bridge. The man returns home, only to discover that his escape was merely a hallucination in the final moments of his life, and that the noose is still around his neck. In the third chapter, the main character experiences hallucinations—he sees constellations that do not exist in the sky and hears whispering. When the platoon passes through the ruined village for a second time, the arrangement of the stars is shown to have changed, and the constellation Orion is depicted near a full moon.
