Short description
Steven Spielberg directed this historical thriller, based on the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics, when eleven Israeli athletes were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian group Black September. In response, the Israeli government assembles a small undercover team and sends it across Europe to find and eliminate the men it holds responsible. Eric Bana plays Avner, the former Mossad officer chosen to lead the operation. The mission requires him and his colleagues to give up their identities and their families, and the longer it runs, the more the men question the purpose and legitimacy of what they are doing. The screenplay was written by Eric Roth and Tony Kushner, and the cast includes Daniel Craig, Ciarán Hinds, Mathieu Kassovitz, Hanns Zischler and Ayelet Zurer, among 125 credited performers.
The film sits midway through Spielberg's filmography, arriving between The Terminal in 2004 and War of the Worlds in 2005 as the twenty-eighth of the forty features he has directed. Made for a budget of about 70 million dollars, it took in roughly 131 million worldwide. Audiences rate it at 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb, from some 253,000 votes, and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB, from around 3,100 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.8 out of 10 from 210 reviews, a slightly warmer assessment than either audience score. It runs 164 minutes.
