The Babe

The Babe traces the life of George Herman Ruth, from a difficult childhood at a Baltimore reform school, where his talent for baseball first stood out, to his rise as one of the sport's great sluggers with the New York Yankees. Along the way it follows his two marriages, his appetite for a high-living lifestyle, and the suspensions that came with it, as well as his later years, when the Yankees declined to keep him on as manager and he ended his playing days with the Boston Braves.

Arthur Hiller directed the film, the sixteenth of the seventeen features he made in his career, arriving between Taking Care of Business and Carpool. John Fusco wrote and produced. John Goodman plays Ruth, with Kelly McGillis as Claire Ruth, Trini Alvarado as Helen Ruth, James Cromwell as Brother Mathias, Randy Steinmeyer as Ty Cobb and Michael McGrady as Lou Gehrig. Thirty-five cast members and sixty-three crew members are credited.

Released in April 1992, the drama runs 115 minutes and was made by Universal Pictures with Finnegan/Pinchuk Productions and Waterhorse Productions. It took in about 20 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from 174 votes.
