Meg 2: The Trench

Meg 2: The Trench is a science fiction action film about a team of researchers who descend into the deepest parts of the ocean to explore waters that have barely been studied. Their expedition runs into trouble when a ruthless mining operation working the same territory puts the mission and the crew in danger. The confrontation unfolds underwater, where the researchers also have to deal with enormous prehistoric sharks known as Megs, and the story turns into a struggle to reach the surface alive. The film is a sequel to The Meg from 2018, and Jason Statham returns as Jonas Taylor.

Ben Wheatley directed, working from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber. The film sits late in Wheatley's filmography, after titles such as High-Rise, Free Fire, Rebecca and In the Earth, and it was followed by Bulk and Normal. Alongside Statham, the cast includes Wu Jing, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Sienna Guillory, with 32 credited cast members and 92 credited crew.

The production, a Chinese and American co-production, cost about 129 million dollars and returned close to 399 million dollars worldwide. Audiences were mixed: on IMDb it holds 5 out of 10 from around 101,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 4,100 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 183 reviews places it below the audience scores.
