Gabbie and her nine-year-old son Travis move into a New Orleans mansion they bought at a surprisingly low price, hoping to leave their past behind. It soon becomes clear the house is already occupied by ghosts. Gabbie turns to a local priest, who gathers a mismatched group of helpers: a widowed scientist who studies the paranormal, a medium from the French Quarter, and a historian. Together this improvised team tries to clear the house of its supernatural residents, though their efforts do not go smoothly.
Justin Simien directed the film, his third feature after Dear White People and Bad Hair, from a screenplay by Katie Dippold. Rosario Dawson plays Gabbie and Chase W. Dillon plays Travis, with LaKeith Stanfield as Ben Matthias, Owen Wilson as Father Kent, Tiffany Haddish as Harriet, and Danny DeVito as Bruce Davis. The production, from Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback, had a budget of 158 million dollars and returned 117 million dollars worldwide, a shortfall for a film of that scale. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from 50,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from 1,274 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 255 reviews sits below the audience scores.
