Breaking Surface

Breaking Surface follows two half-sisters, Ida and Tuva, who travel to a remote stretch of the northern Norwegian coast for a winter dive. Tuva becomes trapped underwater when a rockslide sends debris into the water. Ida surfaces to get help and finds the same slide has buried their equipment, phones and car keys on land, cutting the sisters off from any outside assistance. Ida must find a way to free Tuva before her air runs out. The film is a survival thriller set largely around a single dive site, with the sisters' relationship and Ida's composure under pressure driving the tension. Joachim Hedén wrote and directed. It is the first of the two features he has directed, followed by The Last Breath in 2024, and it was produced by Peter Possne, Anna Croneman and Inge Wegge. Moa Gammel plays Ida and Madeleine Martin plays Tuva, with supporting roles for Trine Wiggen, Lena Hope, Maja Söderström and Olle Wirenhed. Made across Belgium, Norway and Sweden through companies including Film i Väst, SVT, Film i Skåne and uMedia, the film runs 82 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 6,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from 455 votes, a smaller and slightly warmer sample. A critics' rating of 7.3 from seven reviews places it above both audience scores, though that figure rests on very few reviews.
