Penny Proud is about to turn sixteen and hopes to spend her birthday near the rapper she admires. Her father, Oscar, has other plans: he takes the whole family on an all-expenses-paid tropical vacation. The trip turns out to be a trap set by the scheming scientist Dr. Carver, who wants the recipe for one of Oscar's snack sauces and will not let the family leave until he gets it. With her relatives held captive, Penny has to find a way to rescue them herself.
The film is a 2005 animated television movie from the United States, produced by Hyperion Pictures and Jambalaya Studio and running 95 minutes. It was directed by Bruce W. Smith, whose feature credits begin with this title and later include Hair Love. The screenplay is by John Patrick White, Stiles White and Ralph Farquhar. Kyla Pratt voices Penny, with Tommy Davidson as Oscar, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy, Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama, Orlando Brown as Sticky Webb and Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey among a credited cast of 28.
Reception has been modest. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from around 2,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 89 votes. The two audience scores land in similar territory, suggesting a film watched mainly by viewers already attached to the characters rather than one that found a broad new following.
