In 2199, Earth has been devastated by meteor bombardments from the alien Gamilas, leaving the surface poisoned by radiation. The surviving humans live in underground shelters, and within a year the radiation will make the planet uninhabitable for good. A message arrives from the distant planet Iscandar, offering a device that could cleanse Earth. The crew of the rebuilt battleship Yamato sets out on the long voyage to retrieve it, with the Gamilas fleet standing in their way.
Takashi Yamazaki directed this Japanese adaptation of the anime series, his third feature in an eighteen-film career that followed Ballad and preceded Always: Sunset on Third Street '64. Shimako Sato wrote the screenplay. Takuya Kimura plays former pilot Susumu Kodai, with Meisa Kuroki as Yuki Mori; the cast also includes Toshiro Yanagiba, Naoto Ogata, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi and Shinichi Tsutsumi.
Made for around 25 million dollars, the film took about 50 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6 out of 10 from roughly 6,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from about 276 votes, a smaller and slightly more favourable sample.
