Short description

Deloris Van Cartier has returned to her life as a Las Vegas performer, but her former convent sisters seek her out when a struggling Catholic school in San Francisco needs help. The students are unruly and dismissive of their music lessons, and the school faces the threat of closure. Deloris agrees to pose once more as Sister Mary Clarence and take over the music class, working to reach the students and prepare them for a choir competition that could determine the school's future. Mother Superior and the other sisters, including Sister Mary Patrick, appear alongside her.

Bill Duke directed the film, which followed his 1992 crime drama Deep Cover in his filmography. Whoopi Goldberg leads a cast that includes Kathy Najimy, Maggie Smith, Barnard Hughes, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lauryn Hill as student Rita Louise Watson. James Orr, Jim Cruickshank and Judi Ann Mason wrote the screenplay, and Scott Rudin and Dawn Steel produced. Made for a budget of 38 million dollars, it grossed 57 million dollars worldwide.

Audience responses were moderate. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 63,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from roughly 2,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.8 from 36 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When the students go out onto the basketball court, Lauryn Hill’s character begins to rap. This scene was improvised.
  • The cinematographer had to resort to all sorts of tricks to avoid showing the arthritic hands of James Coburn (1928-2002) in the frame.
  • The famous high note performed by Ryan Toby in the song "Oh, Happy Day" is an "E", one of the highest and most difficult to perform. Toby was 16 years old at the time of filming.
