Sam Cleary, a thirteen-year-old living in Granite City, becomes convinced that the reclusive old man across the street, Joe Smith, is really Samaritan, the superpowered vigilante long believed dead. Years earlier, the city's hero was reported killed in a warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis, and most residents accept that he is gone. As crime spreads and the city slides toward chaos, Sam sets out to persuade his neighbor to come out of hiding and help. Sylvester Stallone plays Joe Smith, with Javon Walton as Sam, Dascha Polanco as Sam's mother Tiffany, Moisés Arias as Reza, Pilou Asbæk as Cyrus and Sophia Tatum as Sil.
Julius Avery directed the film, his third feature after Son of a Gun and Overlord, working from a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut. Stallone produced alongside Braden Aftergood through Balboa Productions, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film runs 102 minutes and mixes action and crime with science fiction.
Samaritan opened in August 2022 to a divided response. On IMDb it holds 5.7 from roughly 61,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from about 2,300 votes; a critics' rating of 5 out of 10 across 120 reviews places professional opinion below the more forgiving audience scores. Against a budget of 100 million dollars, its worldwide gross of 75 million dollars fell short of that outlay.
