Short description
A family on a tropical holiday is urged by their hotel to visit a secluded beach tucked between rocky cliffs, and other guests join them there: another couple with a small daughter, a middle-aged pair and a well-known rapper. The outing turns frightening when the visitors find a body and notice that the children among them are growing up within hours. Something about the cove is speeding up their lives, so that a single day at the shore covers decades, and leaving proves impossible.
M. Night Shyamalan directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced with Marc Bienstock and Ashwin Rajan. It is the twelfth of the fifteen films he has directed, following Glass and preceding Knock at the Cabin. Gael García Bernal and Vicky Krieps play the parents, Guy and Prisca, with Rufus Sewell as Charles and Abbey Lee as Chrystal; Alex Wolff and Thomasin McKenzie portray the children at older ages. The production, mounted by Universal Pictures, Perfect World Pictures and Blinding Edge Pictures, cost about 18 million dollars and took roughly 90 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 5.5 from 344 reviews, while on TMDB viewers give it 6.3 from over five thousand votes, a modest split between professional and audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- Before filming began, Shyamalan gave the actors and crew two films in the spirit of which he planned to shoot “Time,” according to his own words. These were “Walkabout” (1971) by Nicolas Roeg (1928-2018) and “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (1975) by Peter Weir.
- This is an adaptation of the graphic novel (2010) by Pierre Lévi and Frédéric Pieters titled “Sandcastle.” Here's what director M. Night Shyamalan said about what prompted him to take on the adaptation: “This book helped me deal with many of my own issues with perceiving the concepts of death and growing up, as well as the aging of my parents.”
- Filming took place in the Dominican Republic in the fall of 2020.
