What's left behind the scenes
- Burt Lancaster was intended to star in the film. Given Lancaster's star status in 1979, his fee would have been 750,000 dollars. The producers told Cavani that they didn't have that kind of money. Ultimately, Burt liked the script so much that he said, 'I'll do it for free. Just provide a car with a driver and a hotel for me and my girlfriend.'
- The film is based on the eponymous autobiographical novel by Curzio Malaparte. Following the Allied landings in Sicily in 1943, the writer took a direct part in the events.
