Short description
The Shipping News follows Quoyle, a timid and unlucky man living in New York. His life changes when his wife Petal, who has been unfaithful, dies in a car accident. Left alone with his young daughter Bunny, he decides to leave the city and move with his aunt Agnis to Newfoundland, the birthplace of his ancestors. There he takes a job as a reporter at a local newspaper, covering the shipping news, and begins to rebuild his sense of self. He also meets Wavey, a widow still holding on to her own past, and the two slowly form a connection.
The film was directed by Lasse Hallström, the seventh of the twenty features listed for him in chronological order, arriving between Chocolat and An Unfinished Life. Robert Nelson Jacobs wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Kevin Spacey as Quoyle, Julianne Moore as Wavey, Cate Blanchett as Petal, Judi Dench as Agnis and Pete Postlethwaite as Tert Card.
Released in December 2001, the drama runs 111 minutes and was produced by Miramax with a budget of about 38 million dollars. It earned roughly 25 million dollars worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from 435 votes, while critics rated it 5.8 from 131 reviews, a slightly lower figure than the audience score.
