Kay is a reserved and superstitious young woman trying to build a stable life with her boyfriend Louis. Her efforts are disrupted when her sister Dawn, known to everyone as Sweetie, comes back after a long absence. Sweetie is reckless and unpredictable, and her return brings long-buried tensions within the family to the surface, putting pressure on Kay and Louis's relationship. The film follows the two sisters and the strain between Kay's need for order and Sweetie's chaotic presence.
Sweetie was directed by Jane Campion, who wrote the screenplay with Gerard Lee and made the film as her first feature, following the short Passionless Moments and preceding An Angel at My Table and The Piano. It is an Australian production, produced by John Maynard, and runs 100 minutes. The cast includes Geneviève Lemon as Dawn, Karen Colston as Kay, Tom Lycos as Louis, Jon Darling as Gordon, Dorothy Barry as Flo and Andre Pataczek as Clayton, with a total credited cast of 38 and 50 credited crew.
Released on 28 September 1989, the film has a rating of 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 5,800 votes, and 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from 20 reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores. The vote counts on both audience platforms are modest.
