Short description
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place generations after Caesar's reign, in a world where apes have become the dominant species and humans live in the shadows. A young chimpanzee named Noa sees his clan captured by a tyrannical ape leader, Proximus Caesar, who twists Caesar's legacy for his own ambitions and forces other clans into servitude. Setting out to free his people, Noa meets a human girl and is forced to reconsider what he has been taught about the past, with consequences for both species.
The film is directed by Wes Ball, his fourth feature after the three Maze Runner adaptations and before an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. The screenplay is by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the latter two also producing. Owen Teague plays Noa, with Freya Allan as Mae, Kevin Durand as Proximus Caesar, Peter Macon as Raka, William H. Macy as Trevathan and Eka Darville as Sylva. Thirty cast members and 105 crew are credited.
Produced by Chernin Entertainment, TSG Entertainment, 20th Century Studios and Jason T. Reed Productions, the film cost about 160 million dollars and earned roughly 397 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 6.8 rating on IMDb from 167,000 votes and a 7.1 on TMDB from 4,459 votes; critics gave it 7 out of 10 across 330 reviews, placing it in line with how audiences received it.
What's left behind the scenes
- As soon as he was cast as Noah, Owen Teague began studying anthropoid apes at a sanctuary in Florida. He started with chimpanzees, figuring out how the animals spend their time and how they move. He was particularly drawn to a chimpanzee named Bentley. According to Teague, it was Bentley who helped him develop the character of Noah, which he then embodied on screen.
- The film is set approximately 300 years after the events of Matt Reeves' science fiction action film "War for the Planet of the Apes" (2017).
- In the government bunker, the apes discover a doll that says “mama”—just like the doll Charlton Heston’s character found in the science fiction film *Planet of the Apes* (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1967), and this lends weight and credibility to the theory that humans were once the dominant life form.
- When working on the action scenes of the human hunt on the river, the filmmakers used a technique previously used in James Cameron’s science fiction action film *Avatar: The Way of Water* (2022). They needed the interaction of computer-generated ape images with water to look as realistic as possible on the screen.
