Short description

This Western drama follows the life of the famous gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok. After a career as a lawman, an aging and weary Hickok settles in Deadwood, South Dakota. While he finds companionship with Calamity Jane, he remains haunted by the memory of a woman he previously left behind. The conflict intensifies when a mysterious stranger arrives in town, intent on killing Hickok to seek retribution for the woman's heartbreak. This tension leads toward a final, violent confrontation.

Directed and written by Walter Hill, this project was the 16th of 22 films he directed, following Geronimo: An American Legend and preceding Last Man Standing. The movie stars Jeff Bridges in the lead role, appearing alongside Ellen Barkin, John Hurt, Diane Lane, Keith Carradine, and David Arquette. Produced by Richard D. Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck, the film had a budget of 30 million USD but earned only 2 million USD at the worldwide box office.

Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.8/10 on IMDb from 8,700 votes and 5.7/10 on TMDB from 183 votes. These figures are similar to the film critics' rating of 5.5/10 based on 28 reviews.
