New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the film, Timothée Chalamet performs 40 of Dylan's songs, playing the guitar and harmonica. Everything was recorded live during filming. Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), and Boyd Holbrook (Johnny Cash) also sang and played instruments in the movie. According to sound engineer Todd A. Maitland, the audio was recorded using microphones and musical instruments of that era, without the use of in-ear monitors.
- During the coronavirus pandemic, as part of his preparation for the role, Timothée Chalamet studied the life of Bob Dylan, visited him in New York, and consulted with Joel Coen.
- According to Edward Norton (who played Pete Seeger), Timothée Chalamet remained in character throughout the three months of filming and did not interact with friends or visitors on set. Director and screenwriter James Mangold frequently called him Bob.
