One Night in Miami...

One Night in Miami... takes place on the night of February 25, 1964, when Cassius Clay, not yet known as Muhammad Ali, defeats Sonny Liston to become world heavyweight boxing champion. Because segregation prevents him from staying with the celebrating crowds in Miami Beach, Clay marks the victory at the Hampton House motel in a historically Black neighborhood of Miami, where he is joined by three friends: Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football player Jim Brown. Over the course of the evening, the four men discuss their roles in the social and cultural changes reshaping the United States, and the gathering pushes each of them to consider what comes next.

The film is Regina King's feature directorial debut, made from a screenplay by Kemp Powers, who wrote the stage play the story is based on. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X, Eli Goree plays Clay, Aldis Hodge plays Jim Brown and Leslie Odom Jr. plays Sam Cooke, with Joaquina Kalukango and Nicolette Robinson among a credited cast of 43. Released on December 25, 2020, it runs 114 minutes and was produced by Amazon Studios, ABKCO Films and Snoot Entertainment on a budget of 17 million dollars.

Reception divides somewhat along audience and critical lines. On IMDb the rating is 7.1 out of 10 from around 36,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 7 out of 10 from roughly 719 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 8.3 out of 10 from 348 reviews. That gap suggests reviewers responded to the film more strongly than general viewers did.
