Sathi Leelavathi centres on Arunachalam, a married man who begins an affair with a woman named Priya, driven by his dissatisfaction with his wife Leelavathi's appearance and weight. When Leelavathi learns of the relationship, she joins forces with Dr. Sakthivel to try to bring her husband back. The film sets this domestic conflict inside a comic framework, following how the deceived wife and the doctor set their plan in motion.
The film was directed by Balu Mahendra, whose earlier work includes Moondram Pirai (1982) and Un Kannil Neer Vazhinthal... (1985), and who returned later with Thalaimuraigal (2013). He shares screenplay credit with Kamal Haasan, who also produced the film through Raajkamal Films International. Ramesh Aravind plays Arunachalam, Heera Rajgopal appears as Priya, Kalpana takes the role of Leelavathi, and Kamal Haasan plays Dr. Sakthivel, with Kovai Sarala and Chokkalinga Bhagavathar also in the cast. The film runs 144 minutes and blends comedy with drama.
On IMDb it holds 8.1 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.5 out of 10 from a much smaller handful of votes. The wide gap in vote numbers makes the IMDb score the more meaningful measure of how the film has been received by audiences over the years, and it points to a enduring following for this Tamil comedy drama.
