Short description

Shadow in the Cloud is set during the Second World War, when a young woman named Maude Garrett boards an American B-17 bomber carrying a bag of secret documents. The all-male crew is not expecting her, and she is sent to a cramped gun turret on the underside of the aircraft. From there she spots enemy fighters in the clouds and something stranger moving along the plane's exterior. The men dismiss her warnings, leaving her to face both the hostile reception aboard and a malevolent presence that has taken hold of the bomber.

The film was directed by Roseanne Liang, who wrote the screenplay with Max Landis. It is a New Zealand and United States co-production, with Chloë Grace Moretz as Maude Garrett and supporting turns from Nick Robinson, Beulah Koale, Taylor John Smith, Callan Mulvey and Benedict Wall. Running 83 minutes, it blends action, horror and war elements.

Released in 2021, it earned about 1 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5 out of 10 from roughly 34,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.8 out of 10 from about 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 131 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, indicating a modest overall reception.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Max Landis's original screenplay was significantly reworked by director Rosanna Liang as a result of accusations of sexual harassment against Landis at the time. According to Liang and actress Chloë Grace Moretz, Landis took no part in the work on the film, and the script was rewritten several times before filming began. Landis watched the film and stated that the script remained 90-95% his.
  • The original title of the film translates to "Shadow in the Clouds".
  • In preparation for the role, Chloë Grace Moretz visited the maternity ward of a military hospital and spoke with new mothers.
  • The animated segment at the beginning of the film is based on "Private Snafu" – a series of black-and-white American satirical training short films for soldiers, which were released in 1943-1945. The main character's name stands for the acronym from military slang SNAFU (Situation Normal: All Fucked Up), which translates to "Situation normal: all messed up". The purpose of the films was to instruct the military on safety measures, sanitary habits, etc., and to improve the morale of the troops. The cartoons were not intended for a civilian audience, so censorship restrictions did not apply to them.
  • During World War II, there was a women's pilot service in the US Air Force. By the end of the war, it numbered 1074 people; it was an organization of civilian women pilots who flew military aircraft of all types.
