All Quiet on the Western Front follows Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier who enlists with his friends Albert and Müller during the First World War. Encouraged by patriotic ideals and visions of heroism, the recruits arrive on the Western Front expecting glory, but the reality of trench warfare quickly strips away their enthusiasm. What they encounter is not honour but constant danger, loss and despair, and the film traces how the young men are changed by the conflict they volunteered for.
Edward Berger directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, working from Erich Maria Remarque's novel. The film is Berger's second feature, following Jack (2014) and preceding Conclave (2024) and Ballad of a Small Player (2025). Felix Kammerer plays Paul, with Albrecht Schuch as Katczinsky, Aaron Hilmer as Kropp, Moritz Klaus as Müller, Adrian Grünewald as Behm and Edin Hasanović as Tjaden. Produced by Malte Grunert, Berger and Daniel Marc Dreifuss, the film is a German, British and American co-production made for about 20 million dollars.
On IMDb it holds 7.8 from roughly 313,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.7 from just under 5,000 votes, indicating broad approval from a very large audience. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 177 reviews places it somewhat higher than those viewer scores.
