Marmaduke is a Great Dane who behaves more like an oversized lapdog, prone to mischief but deeply attached to the Winslow family he lives with. His unruly behaviour leads to a series of accidents, and when one of them draws the attention of a well-known dog trainer, Marmaduke is pulled into the world of competitive dog shows, a scene full of rivalries, prima-donna animals and slapstick mishaps.
The film is an animated family adventure directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, working from a screenplay by Byron Kavanagh. It is the eleventh feature in the directing chronology that also includes Spawn (1997), several Garfield animated films, The Reef 2: High Tide (2012) and The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island (2018). Pete Davidson voices Marmaduke, with J.K. Simmons as Zeus, David Koechner as Phil Winslow, Mary Hart, Julie Nathanson and Terri Douglas among a credited cast of 34. It was produced through One Cool Film Production, SC Films International, Legacy Classics and Andrews McMeel Universal, and runs 87 minutes.
Released in April 2022, the film took about 3 million dollars worldwide against a modest production scale. On IMDb it holds 3.3/10 from around 5,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5/10 from 98 votes. A critics' rating of 2.4/10 from 11 reviews places professional assessment below even the lower audience figure, though both point to a muted reception for the film.
