Dirty Pair: Project Eden

Dirty Pair: Project Eden is a 1986 Japanese animated science fiction film set in a future where humanity has spread across thousands of colony worlds. Its story centres on Agerna, a planet whose large deposits of Vizorium, a mineral vital to space travel, have made it strategically important. When mining facilities come under attack, the governments involved accuse one another, and the Worlds Welfare Work Association dispatches its two best Trouble Consultants, Kei and Yuri, officially known as the Lovely Angels and informally as the Dirty Pair. Their investigation puts them on the trail of a scientist pursuing a dangerous goal connected to a long-dormant alien species, while a thief with an interest in a rare bottle of vintage wine adds further complications. The film mixes action and comedy with science fiction, and its two leads are remembered less for the tidiness of their solutions than for the destruction that tends to follow them.

The film was directed by Koichi Mashimo, the first of the four features listed in his directing credits, from a screenplay by Hiroyuki Hoshiyama. It was produced by Sunrise, with Hironori Nakagawa and Yoshihide Kondo as producers, and features Kyoko Tongu as Kei, Saeko Shimazu as Yuri, Katsuji Mori as Carson D. Carson, Chikao Ohtsuka as Dr. Wattsman, Mikio Terashima as the Head of Production Committee and Toku Nishio as Bruno.
