Seventh Son

Seventh Son is a fantasy adventure set in the eighteenth century. Master John Gregory is a Spook, a man who defends ordinary people from witches, boggarts and other supernatural threats. He is growing old and has spent years searching for an apprentice, but most candidates have not survived the training. His last hope is Tom Ward, a farmer's son who happens to be the seventh son of a seventh son. Tom leaves his home to learn the trade just as the powerful witch Mother Malkin escapes the prison Gregory bound her in centuries earlier. With little time before the next blood moon, Gregory must prepare the boy to face her and the forces she gathers.

The film was directed by Sergei Bodrov, whose earlier features include Running Free, Nomad: The Warrior and Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan. Jeff Bridges plays Gregory and Julianne Moore plays Malkin, with Ben Barnes as Tom, Alicia Vikander as Alice Deane and Kit Harington as William Bradley. The screenplay was written by Charles Leavitt, Steven Knight and Matt Greenberg.

Produced by Universal Pictures, Legendary Pictures, Wigram Productions and Thunder Road, the film cost about 95 million dollars and took roughly 114 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from 84,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 out of 10 from 2,710 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 119 reviews places it well below those audience scores.
