Set in 1930s Hong Kong, Rouge follows Fleur, a courtesan, and Chan Chen-Pang, the son of a wealthy family, whose romance is opposed by the world around them. They agree to die together, but only Fleur goes through with it. Her ghost lingers for decades before returning to the living city, where she enlists a young couple to help her track down the man she has been waiting for.
The film was directed by Stanley Kwan, released in 1987 and running 96 minutes, placing it between his debut Love Unto Wastes and his later Center Stage, Lan Yu and First Night Nerves. Anita Mui plays Fleur and Leslie Cheung plays Chan Chen-Pang, with Alex Man Chi-Leung, Emily Chu Bo-Yee, Irene Wan and Tam Sin-Hung in supporting roles. Lilian Lee and Chiu Kang-Chien wrote the screenplay, and Jackie Chan and Leonard Ho produced.
Blending drama, fantasy, mystery and romance, Rouge has drawn an IMDb rating of 7.3 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.4 from a much smaller base of 96 ratings. The two scores sit close together, suggesting a fairly consistent response across the audiences who have logged the film.
