The Assassination Bureau
Short description
The Assassination Bureau is a British action-adventure comedy set in London in the early years of the twentieth century. Sonya Winter, a young woman determined to make her name as a journalist and campaigner for women's rights, learns of a secret organization that carries out killings it presents as justice. She commissions the murder of the bureau's chairman, Ivan Dragomiloff, hoping to expose the operation. He accepts the contract, aware that his colleagues have come to care more about money than principle, and turns the commission into a contest: his board members must try to kill him, while he hunts them in return.
Basil Dearden directed the film, working from a screenplay by Michael Relph, who also produced it. It was Dearden's fifth listed feature in a directing career that included Dead of Night, Sapphire, Victim and Khartoum, and it followed Khartoum by three years. Oliver Reed plays Dragomiloff and Diana Rigg plays Sonya Winter, with Telly Savalas, Curd Jürgens, Philippe Noiret and Warren Mitchell among the credited cast of forty-two. The film runs 112 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller base of 96 votes. Both figures point to a modest but settled reception rather than a widely celebrated one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on an unfinished book by Jack London, the idea for which he bought from a young journalist named Sinclair Lewis (a future classic of American literature). Jack London wanted to write a detective novel set in various European cities, but managed to leave behind only eleven chapters. Much later, detective novelist Robert L. Fish completed the book, drawing on the author's remaining sketches and drafts.
