The Weather Man
Short description
David Spritz is a popular Chicago television weatherman whose professional life looks enviable: he earns well for little airtime and has an offer to join a New York morning show. His personal life is another matter. He is divorced from his wife, struggles to connect with his two children, and cannot win the respect of his father, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. As he tries to hold his career and family together, the film follows his growing awareness that life, like the weather he forecasts, resists his attempts at control.
Gore Verbinski directed the film, which sits between The Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest in his filmography, from a screenplay by Steven Conrad. Nicolas Cage plays David, with Michael Caine as his father, Hope Davis as his ex-wife Noreen, and Gemmenne de la Peña and Nicholas Hoult as his children. The production, made by Paramount and Escape Artists among others, cost about 20 million USD and returned roughly 12 million USD worldwide.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from more than 1,100 votes, indicating a modest audience response. Released in October 2005 and running 101 minutes, it blends comedy and drama in its portrait of a man balancing public success against private disappointment.

- The movie Mike is watching while his parents are arguing is 'Clear and Present Danger' (1994).
- Paramount Pictures intended to film in Toronto, Canada, instead of Chicago, where the movie takes place, but director Gore Verbinski and Nicolas Cage insisted on filming in Chicago for the sake of authenticity.
- Director Gore Verbinski personally played the guitar for Hans Zimmer's soundtrack.
- Filming took place from February 23 to early May 2004. Despite it being winter, the weather was very warm during the first few days, and there was no snow. Since the script called for the action to take place in winter, the production designers had to create snowy lawns and drifts literally from scratch.
- The various food scraps thrown at Nicolas Cage's character throughout the film were thrown by the director, Gore Verbinski.
- The production crew's technical advisor was Tom Skilling, a well-known Chicago meteorologist, who also makes a cameo appearance as the head of the television studio.
- Nicolas Cage recorded all of his internal monologues at a local recording studio before filming began.
- The plastic spoon stuck to the lapel of Nicolas Cage's jacket was actually made of metal, specially painted to look like plastic, and held in place with a magnet.
