On Guy Fawkes Night in 1892, Oscar Wilde and his lover Lord Alfred Douglas slip into a luxurious London brothel. Its owner, Alfred Taylor, has arranged something for the playwright: a private staging of Wilde's play Salome, which the authorities had banned. Taylor and the brothel's residents take the roles, and the performance unfolds inside the establishment as Wilde watches.
Ken Russell directed and wrote the film, with Penny Corke producing. It is the fourteenth of the fifteen features he directed, arriving between The Lair of the White Worm and Whore. The cast includes Nickolas Grace as Wilde, Stratford Johns as Taylor, Glenda Jackson as Lady Alice, Douglas Hodge as Bosey, Denis Lill as Chilvers and Imogen Millais Scott as Rose; several performers double as figures from the play, among them Jackson, Johns, Hodge and Millais Scott. Russell's screenplay draws on Wilde's tragedy and on the events surrounding its prohibition.
The film runs eighty-nine minutes and was released in May 1988 as a British production. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.2 from thirty-eight votes, a modest showing with limited audience participation. Thirty-eight cast members and fifty-eight crew members are credited.
