Abe Applebaum was once a local celebrity in his hometown, a child detective who solved neighbourhood mysteries. Now in his early thirties, he still takes on petty cases, drinking heavily and feeling sorry for himself, while most people his age have moved on. His routine changes when a young woman named Caroline asks him to investigate who killed her boyfriend. The case is far more serious than anything he has handled before, and it forces him to confront both the investigation and the state of his own life.
The Kid Detective is a Canadian comedy, drama and mystery directed and written by Evan Morgan, marking his debut as a feature director. Adam Brody plays Abe, with Sophie Nélisse as Caroline and supporting turns from Tzi Ma, Peter MacNeill, Maurice Dean Wint and Jonathan Whittaker. The production involved 49 credited cast members and 68 credited crew, and the film runs 99 minutes.
Released in October 2020, the film drew a critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 65 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 7 out of 10 on IMDb, from around 25,000 votes, and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB, from roughly 500 votes. That split suggests reviewers responded more strongly than general viewers did, and the much larger IMDb sample indicates a modest but engaged audience.
