Paolo Sorrentino wrote and directed this Italian drama, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story set in 1980s Naples. Seventeen-year-old Fabietto Schisa, played by Filippo Scotti, is an awkward teenager trying to find his footing within a large, exuberant family. His world shifts on two fronts during the same period: the arrival of football star Diego Maradona at the local club SSC Napoli, which electrifies the city and gives Fabietto a new sense of pride; and an unexpected tragedy within his family. Sorrentino's screenplay sets the joy of that moment against the shock of the loss, leaving Fabietto to reckon with fate, grief and the freedom that comes with being alive.
Toni Servillo and Teresa Saponangelo play Fabietto's parents, Saverio and Maria, with Luisa Ranieri as Patrizia and Marlon Joubert as his brother Marchino. The film belongs to a strong run in Sorrentino's career, coming after The Great Beauty, Youth and the two Loro films and before Parthenope and La Grazia. Made for around 13 million dollars, it found a substantial audience: on IMDb it holds 7.3 from about 54,000 votes and on TMDB 7.5 from around 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 157 reviews indicates that reviewers and general viewers broadly agreed on its merits.
