Alex and Nancy Rose are a young New York couple who buy a Brooklyn duplex that seems to be the home of their dreams. The catch is a sitting tenant: Mrs. Connelly, an elderly woman living in the upstairs apartment, whose right to stay cannot be ended. She is not the frail, agreeable neighbour they expected, and her constant demands and intrusions soon turn the couple's new life into a trial. Their patience wears thin as they look for a way out of the arrangement.
Danny DeVito directed the film, which comes after Death to Smoochy in a run of features that also includes Throw Momma from the Train, The War of the Roses, Hoffa and Matilda. The screenplay is by Larry Doyle, and the producers are Nancy Juvonen, Drew Barrymore and Ben Stiller. Stiller and Barrymore play Alex and Nancy, with Eileen Essell as Mrs. Connelly, and Harvey Fierstein, Justin Theroux and James Remar among the supporting cast.
Made for a budget of about 40 million US dollars, the comedy drew roughly 19 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 65,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from about 1,854 votes. The film critics' rating is 5.1 out of 10 from 109 reviews, below the audience scores.
