Concrete Utopia

A massive earthquake has left Seoul in ruins, yet one apartment complex, Hwang Gung Apartments, remains standing. Its residents initially take in survivors seeking shelter from the extreme cold, but as outsiders keep arriving, the building's original inhabitants struggle to cope. Fearing for their own survival, they appoint a leader and hold a vote that expels the newcomers, then organize their own tightly controlled society with security patrols, medical staff and supply gatherers. The film follows Yeong-tak, who leads the defense of the building, Min-seong, an office worker drawn deeper into the group's decisions, and Myeong-hwa, a former nurse who tends to the injured.

Um Tae-hwa directed and co-wrote the film with Lee Sin-ji, following his 2016 feature Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned and preceding Love wins all. Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-jun and Park Bo-young head the cast, with Kim Sun-young, Kim Do-yoon and Park Ji-hu in supporting roles. Produced by Byun Seung-min through Climax Studios, Lotte Entertainment and BH Entertainment, the film runs 130 minutes across action, drama, science fiction and thriller territory.

Released in August 2023, Concrete Utopia took in about 29 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from roughly 9,100 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB from around 319 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.3 from 63 reviews.
