Scrubbers is set in a British reform school for girls, where the inmates fight, form pairings, attempt suicide and try to escape. Two of the girls, Carol and Annetta, escape from one institution only to end up together in another. Annetta blames Carol for her renewed confinement and sets out to get even with her. Mai Zetterling directs from a screenplay by Susannah Buxton, Roy Minton and Jeremy Watt, with Don Boyd producing. The film was made by HandMade Films and runs 93 minutes.
Zetterling was a Swedish director known for radical work. Scrubbers was the second of the four films she directed, following Doctor Glas and Love, both 1982, and preceding Sunday Pursuit in 1990. Amanda York plays Carol Howden and Chrissie Cotterill plays Annetta Brady; the cast also includes Elizabeth Edmonds, Kate Ingram, Amanda Symonds and Kathy Burke, running to 38 credited performers.
Released on 24 September 1982, the film was produced in the United Kingdom. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 684 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from 25 votes, indicating modest and limited audience approval.
