Uglies

Uglies is set in a future society where everyone must undergo cosmetic surgery at sixteen to conform to imposed standards of beauty. Tally, a teenager counting down to her own procedure, sees her plans upended when her friend Shay disappears. Her search for Shay takes her beyond the world she knows and into conflict with the authorities who enforce the system she has been raised to accept.

The film is directed by McG, whose credits stretch back to Charlie's Angels in 2000 and include We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, The Babysitter and Family Switch. It came in 2024, between Family Switch and Way of the Warrior Kid. The screenplay is by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson, and the cast is led by Joey King as Tally, with Brianne Tju, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Laverne Cox and Charmin Lee. It is based on Scott Westerfeld's novel. Producers included John Davis, Jordan Davis and Robyn Mesinger, and the production involved Wonderland Sound and Vision, Davis Entertainment, Anonymous Content and Industry Entertainment. Roughly forty cast members and fifty-nine crew are credited.

Reception was weak across the board. On IMDb the rating sits at 4.7 from about 37,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 5.7 from 971 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 from 56 reviews is lower still, and the audience scores are not far above it. The film runs 100 minutes.
