Blood on the Sun

Blood on the Sun is set in Tokyo in the late 1920s, where Nick Condon, an American newspaper editor, publishes a story exposing Japan's plans for expansion abroad. The article reaches the highest levels of the Japanese military and causes a scandal, and Condon, who works at the Tokyo Chronicle under publisher Arthur Bickett, refuses to cooperate with the authorities, leaving him under pressure from the secret police and unable to return home. His friend Ollie Miller has obtained genuine documents behind the plan and tries to leave the country with his wife; Condon later finds the situation changed and becomes entangled in a dangerous search for the papers, while Iris Hilliard, a woman of mixed heritage, is drawn into the affair and does not share the ideology behind the plan.

The film was directed by Frank Lloyd, whose earlier work includes Young Nowheres, Berkeley Square and Mutiny on the Bounty; this was the fourth feature he directed and it came after that run. James Cagney stars as Condon and also produced through William Cagney Productions with United Artists. Sylvia Sidney plays Iris Hilliard, with Porter Hall, John Emery, Robert Armstrong and Wallace Ford in supporting roles; Garrett Fort, Lester Cole and Nathaniel Curtis wrote the screenplay.

Released in April 1945 as a wartime drama, the film has modest ratings on IMDb, 6 out of 10 from around 2,500 votes, and on TMDB, 5.9 out of 10 from a smaller group of voters.
