The Living Dead Girl

A chemical spill in the catacombs beneath an old estate seeps into the crypt where Catherine Valmont, a young heiress, was buried. The toxic waste brings her back to life, but she rises with an uncontrollable craving for human blood. After killing in her search for nourishment, she makes her way to Château Valmont, the family home she once shared with her childhood friend Hélène. Hélène is overjoyed to find Catherine apparently alive, and although she senses that something is wrong with her friend, she refuses to accept that Catherine is dead. That devotion leads her to help Catherine find the blood she needs to keep going.

Jean Rollin directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jacques Ralf, working from a story by Sam Selsky, who also produced. The film sits between Schoolgirl Hitchhikers (1973) and Emmanuelle 6 (1988) in Rollin's directing credits. Marina Pierro plays Hélène and Françoise Blanchard plays Catherine, with Mike Marshall, Carina Barone and Fanny Magier in supporting roles.

Released in France in October 1982 and running 86 minutes, the film is a French horror production from Films A.B.C., Les Films du Yaka and Les Films Aleriaz. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 99 votes. The two scores sit close together, indicating a modest but fairly consistent response across both audiences.
