Short description
Young Woman and the Sea tells the true story of Trudy Ederle, an American swimmer who set out to become the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Raised in New York by immigrant parents, she pushes against the expectations placed on women of her time, training with the encouragement of her older sister Meg and a devoted coach. Her ambition carries her onto the United States Olympic swimming team before she takes on the long, cold crossing from France to England, a challenge that had defeated many swimmers before her.
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, whose earlier features include Bandidas, Max Manus: Man of War, Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil; it appeared in his filmography before TRON: Ares. Jeff Nathanson wrote the screenplay and produces alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman. Daisy Ridley plays Trudy, with Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Meg, Stephen Graham as Bill Burgess, Kim Bodnia as Henry Ederle, Jeanette Hain as Gertrude Ederle and Glenn Fleshler as James Sullivan. The production cost about 40 million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.5 from roughly 20,000 votes, and on TMDB it has a rating of 7.9 from 461 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 113 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film starred Petar Stoychev, a swimmer from Bulgaria, one of the most successful marathon swimmers in history, who set a world record for the fastest swim across the English Channel in 2007 and held it until 2012.
- Initially, Paramount Pictures was slated to produce the film with Lily James in the lead role, but then Walt Disney Pictures acquired the rights and stated that screenwriter Jeff Nathanson and producer Jerry Bruckheimer would still be involved in the project.
- In some instances, the film's script deviates from what actually happened, presumably for dramatic effect. Firstly, the filmmakers imply that Gertrude Ederle’s (played by Daisy Ridley) performance at the Paris Olympics was a “disappointment,” as she only won “bronze.” In reality, she won two bronze medals in individual events and “gold” in the relay. Secondly, almost a year passed between Ederle’s first and second attempts to swim the English Channel, and she returned to New York in between. The filmmakers also omitted the fact that, as a warm-up for her first attempt, Ederle swam 35.4 kilometers from New York to New Jersey in a time that no one was able to beat for 81 years.
