Short description

In 2041, robots and androids are part of everyday life. Alex Garel, a celebrated cybernetic engineer, returns after ten years to Santa Irene, the town he left behind, to build a robot child for his old university's robotics department. He finds that his brother David and Lana, the woman he once loved, have built a life together and have a daughter, Eva. The bright, strong-willed girl takes an immediate liking to Alex and begins spending time in his laboratory, where her personality starts shaping the android he is designing. Her parents, particularly her mother, view the growing closeness with suspicion. What begins as a technical challenge becomes something more personal, as Alex is forced to reconsider what he is actually creating and why.

The film is the first feature directed by Kike Maíllo, followed by You and I, Toro, A Perfect Enemy, Disco, Ibiza, Locomía and In Tania's Head. Daniel Brühl plays Alex, with Marta Etura as Lana, Alberto Ammann as David, Claudia Vega as Eva, and Anne Canovas and Lluís Homar in supporting roles. Sergi Belbel, Aintza Serra and Martí Roca wrote the screenplay. Made for about 7 million USD, it returned roughly 1 million USD worldwide, a modest result for a production of its scale. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4/10 from 422 votes, placing audience response slightly above the 6.3/10 recorded from six critics' reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Casting lasted 6 months. From 3,000 applicants, young Claudia Vega was eventually chosen.
  • The film had a 22-minute prologue detailing events that occurred 10 years earlier, but it was cut from the theatrical release. The prologue can only be seen on the DVD and Blu-ray editions.
