Touki Bouki follows Mory, a young cowherd who rides a motorcycle adorned with a cow's skull, and Anta, a university student, who meet in Dakar. Disillusioned with their lives in Senegal and drawn to the idea of Europe, the two dream of leaving for Paris. They have the will but not the money, so Mory turns to shady schemes and petty crime to raise the fare for the journey. The film pairs their romance with their restlessness, moving through the streets of the Senegalese capital as the pair chase a way out.
The film was directed and written by Djibril Diop Mambéty and produced by Medoune Faye, with Magaye Niang and Myriam Niang in the lead roles, alongside Aminata Fall and Ousseynou Diop. It was Mambéty's second feature, following his 1969 debut Contras' City, and it was made in Senegal by Studio Kankourama and Cinegrit.
Released in 1973 and running 91 minutes, Touki Bouki is regarded as a landmark of African cinema. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 4,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 out of 10 from about 124 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores, suggesting stronger appreciation among reviewers than among general viewers.
