Set in the early 1960s, A Home of Our Own follows Frances Lacey, a widow raising six children in Los Angeles. After losing her job, she decides to leave the city and set out with her family in search of a place where they can build a life of their own. The family's journey leads them to a small town in Idaho, where Frances strikes a bargain with a property owner: the family can settle on an unfinished house in exchange for work. The arrangement rests on uncertain ground, and much of the film concerns whether Frances can hold her family together while making the place habitable.
Tony Bill directed the film, which was written by Patrick Sheane Duncan and produced by Bill Borden and Dale Pollock. It was Bill's fifth feature as director, arriving the same year as Untamed Heart and following Crazy People and Five Corners. Kathy Bates leads the cast as Frances, with Edward Furlong as her son Shayne and Clarissa Lassig, Sarah Schaub, Miles Feulner and Amy Sakasitz as the younger children.
Released in November 1993, the drama runs 104 minutes. It drew modest audiences: against a budget of about 12 million dollars, it took in roughly 2 million worldwide. Viewer response has been warmer than that reception suggests, with the film holding a 7.1 rating on IMDb from around 4,600 votes and a 7 on TMDB from about 100 votes.
