Tobe, a restless teenager living on the outskirts of Los Angeles, meets Harlan at a gas station while travelling to the beach with friends. He is a charismatic drifter who dresses as a cowboy and says he once worked on a ranch, and the two are drawn to each other immediately. Her younger brother Lonnie also takes to him, but her father Wade, a lawman, distrusts the stranger and tries to keep him away from his daughter. As the relationship deepens, Harlan's behaviour turns more erratic, and the conflict between the lovers and Tobe's family grows dangerous.
David Jacobson wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Dahmer (2002). Edward Norton, who also produced, plays Harlan, with Evan Rachel Wood as Tobe and David Morse as Wade. Rory Culkin appears as Lonnie, alongside Bruce Dern and John Diehl. The production, a collaboration between Irish and American companies, had a budget of about 8 million USD.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 245 votes, a middling reception for a drama that blends romance, thriller and western elements across its 112-minute running time.
